“We can wake up and our lives can be a miraculous unfolding of beauty and joy.”
— The Wisdom of the Enneagram
We all have aspects of our being that we have never paid attention to, which unconsciously impact our lives and relationships. The Enneagram is a tool for revealing insights into these characteristics that helps us understand the complexity of our human nature and personality. At first glance, the Enneagram appears to be just another personality profiling system. However, that description comes woefully short of capturing the Enneagram for what it truly is: wisdom. The Enneagram is wisdom about nine styles of human character identified most accurately through an understanding of a person's primary motivation and how that motivation impacts behavior because of how they see, interpret, and experience the world. In particular for the disciple of Christ Jesus, this wisdom becomes truly transformational as it is engaged in connection to spiritual practices through God's Spirit.
Concerning the significance of the Enneagram in his own life senior pastor Chris Henry says: “My first encounter with the Enneagram was in prison. I was serving at Metro State Women’s Prison in Atlanta during the summer after seminary graduation, engaged in a clinical pastoral education residency that was part chaplaincy, part internship, and part self-exploration. My supervisor that summer introduced us to this extraordinary tool for understanding ourselves and those with whom we live and work. It was a transformative experience for me. In the description of “type three,” I heard my own passions, hopes, and fears. I felt “seen” in a new way. Over the years, I found this tool the most helpful and impactful in my personal journey, my family life, and my ministry. I would encourage anyone who desires a deeper self-understanding and a wider compassion for others to dive in to the Enneagram!”
